Killarney Clúid housing scheme gets green light

NON-profit housing agency Clúid have been given the green light to proceed with a major social housing development in Killarney.

In the last week the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government has signed off on a proposal to build 61 new homes on a site at Derreen, Ballydribeen on the northern outskirts of Killarney town.

Kerry County Council Director of Corporate Services Martin O’Donoghue told councillors last week that the project has been approved by the Department under its Capital Advance Leasing Facility (CALF) and can now move forward to the last part of the procurement process.

The CALF funding scheme was set up in 2011 to fund the provision of social housing and sees the State provide funding of up to 30 per cent to approved housing bodies.

The development – the largest new social housing project to be built in the county in the last decade – will be built by Clúid working in partnership with Kerry County Council.

It is hoped that work on the new estate can begin by next July and it is expected that all 61 houses will be complete by the end of 2019. The development will include 39 three-bed properties and 22 two-bed units.

The houses will be allocated to people currently on the Kerry County Council housing list in the Killarney area.
