The opening round of the county league was played last Sunday where Skellig Rangers made the long journey to Shannon Park, Tarbert. It took ten minutes to get the opening score from the boot of Finbarr Carrig but Skellig responded with two points before Ger O’Sullivan equalised with a free to level matters. Tarbert were much the dominant side for most of the first half but accuracy in front of goals was proving difficult and Skellig went in at half time leading 0-3 to 0-2. Ger O’Sullivan equalised straight after half time and then a wonderful point from Brian Heaphy put Tarbert up one. Skellig were beginning to get dominant at midfield despite having a player sent off and rattled off points to lead by three entering the final ten minutes. Then the balance of the gamne changed when a mix up in the Skellig goal resulted in an own goal to level matters. An excellent winning point by O’Sullivan put the game beyond Skellig and Tarbert to their credit held out for a well deserved victory on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-8.
