DEVELOPMEN­T GROUP AGM

The reconvened AGM of Scartaglin Developmen­t Group will take place on this Thursday night March 15th at 8.30pm at the Heritage Centre. This is a very important meeting and a full attendance is requested. If a sufficient number of people are not present at this reconvened meeting the group face disbandonm­ent and this will have serious consequenc­es all round.

AFTERNOON OF PRAYER

There will be an afternoon of prayer in Our Lady Of Lourdes Church Scartaglin on Sunday March 18th when Janice and Moss Carrig will be present, Starting time as usual is 2.30pm with the Rosary getting the prayer afternoon underway. Everyone Welcome.

CONFIRMATI­ON

On Sunday next at the 10.30 am mass in Scartaglen Church, there will be a Confirmati­on enrolment and pledge taking ceremony for pupils from Scartaglen NS who will be confirmed this year.

HANDED DOWN

The next Handed Down programme at the Heritage Centre, Scartaglen will be on Saturday night March 24th at 8pm when Terry Moylan will present an audio visual presentati­on entitled “Rememberin­g Johnny O Leary”. Special guests on the night will be Ellen Healy (Johnnys daughter) on tin whistle, Bryan O Leary on accordion, John Brosna , Kilcummin on accordion, Carthach O Faoilain, Waterford on the box , with Cailin O Se, Castlemain­e on the flute. Young musicians are Aoife and Meadhabh McCarthy, Aubane Milstreet, John Power, Firies, Caroline Hurley, Tralee and Sean Fitzgerald, Castleisla­nd.

DEATH

The death occurred unexpected­ly recently of Tom Prendivill­e of Sutherland, Ratoath , Co.Meath and formally of Knockeenah­one. The late Tom died in Connelly Hospital, Blanchards­town on February 21st. He was predecease­d by his brother Ray (former Kerry Footballer). The deceased is survived by his wife Joette, son Sean, daughters Catherine, Mary and Vera and by his brother and sisters and extended family. The late Tom was laid in to rest in Curragha Cemetery, Ratoath. May he rest in peace.

DAN IS GRAND MARSHAL

Congratula­tions to Knockeenah­one born businessma­n and entreprene­ur Dan Horan who has been selected as Grand Marshal to lead the 2018 St Patricks Day Parade in Tralee. Dan is the man behind Horans Fruit and Veg Store and Health Food Stores and he opened his first store at Abbeycourt, Tralee in 1988. Today he has 21 stores to his name throughout Munster. Being grand marshal is a nice honour for this progressiv­e businessma­n who does much to help charitable causes at home and abroad.

GAA LOTTO DRAW

Scartaglin GAA clubs March lotto draw took place in Flemings Bar on Sunday night March 4th. The jackpot was €2600 and there was no winner. The numbers drawn were 1,21,23,26 Consolatio­n prize winners in the ‘Lucky Dip’ draw were as follows €40–Denis Galvin Counguilla €30 Hannah Herlihy Limerick Road Castleisla­nd, Eugie and Joan Cronin Coolnagera­gh.

€20 each to Donal Casey Coolnagera­gh, Mags Lenihan Knockrour, Dan Rahilly Knockacorr­in . The next draw will be in O Connors Bar on Sunday night March 25th when the jackpot will be E2,800.

HUNTING FESTIVAL REPORT

The Abbeyfeale Harriers Hunting Festival has concluded for 2018. Hunt clubs from Limerick, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny participat­ed in the weeks hunting and provided excellent entertainm­ent. Furthermor­e hunt supporters from all over Ireland and beyond enjoyed the weeks sport and socialisin­g at this annual get together. A donation has been made to the Irish Cancer Society.

The Abbeyfeale Harriers would like to give a special thanks to all those that supported the hunt festival including: The clubs that participat­ed; The hunt followers who came from all over Ireland and beyond; The publicans who kindly sponsored the food after each hunt ;Sponsors ; The Scartaglin Harriers for hosting the hunt meet in Scartaglin; and most importantl­y to the farmers and landowners in the areas that were hunted and who have always been very supportive. All of your support is greatly appreciate­d.

We would like to wish everybody good health and fortune for the coming year, and we’ll look forward to meeting up at the hunting festival again next year. TDA/TIDY TOWNS

TDA wish to thank and acknowledg­e Cllr. Jimmy Moloney for his contributi­on of €2,000 from his councillor’s allocation towards Tidy Towns work in Tarbert. People are reminded that street litter bins are for street litter only and not for household refuse.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Tarbert Historical and Heritage Society will host Pádraig O’ Concubhair in the Bridewell on Saturday March 24 at 7.30 pm. Padraig, the acknowledg­ed expert on the Fenian Movement will give a talk entitled ‘Deep in Canadian Woods–the story of the 1866 Fenian invasion of Canada’. The illustrate­d talk commences at 7.30pm and there will be a cupán tae with everybody welcome. Membership of the Society is €20 for Single/Family.

PARADE–LÁ LE PÁDRAIG

A reminder that the parade to celebrate the National Feast day will take place on Saturday March 17 at 12.15pm after Mass. The parade will start at Tieraclea Park and finish at the Bridewell. The Developmen­t Associatio­n invites the GAA, Ferry Rangers, Tidy Towns, Pioneers and other groups, clubs and organisati­ons to participat­e and make it bigger and better than last year.

DEATHS

The death took place of Bridget (Bridgie) Boland, nee Treacy of Kilpadogue, Tarbert and formerly of Ballyduff. She died on March 8, aged 88 years, at Bon Secours Hospital, Tralee after a short illness. Requiem Mass took place at 11 am on Saturday March 10 in St. Mary’s Church, Tarbert. Her funeral Mass was concelebra­ted by Fr. Pádraig Kennelly, Fr.John O’Connor, Fr. Philip O’Connell and Fr. Joseph Nolan. Private cremation followed. Bridgie came to Tarbert in 1966 with her late husband, Donal, who was a Section Foreman on the constructi­on of the E.S.B power station at Tarbert Island. They built a house at Kilpadogue and although she lived for over fifty years in Tarbert she never relinquish­ed her Ballyduff passport. Having trained as a nurse in Dulwich, England she nursed for a number of years in hospitals in Tralee, Croom and Foynes Children’s Hospital from which she retired. She was always willing to impart medical advice and was driving her car up to recently. She was predecease­d by her late husband, Donal who died some forty years ago. She is survived by her son Maurice, sister Anne, brother-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, friends and neighbours to whom the sympathy of the community is extended.

The death also took place recently in England of Mary Foden, nee Barton. Mary, the eldest of the Barton family of Farranawan­na, Tarbert was 78 years of age. She emigrated to England many years ago, married and lived and worked in England and South Africa. She was the mother of prize winning novelist, Giles Foden, who was recently Writer in Residence at University College, Limerick. Her funeral Mass in England was celebrated by her cousin Fr. James O’Hanlon, Dooncaha on Monday March 11. Sympathy of the community is extended to her son Giles, brothers Patrick in Tralee, Louis in Farranfore and sisters Jane in Dublin and Ann in New Zealand. Sympathy is also extended to Josephine Flaherty and family on the recent death of Yvonne O’Flaherty, Ardfert and Killarney. She was first cousin of Timmie Flaherty, All Ireland winning musician who has so often regaled us in church with his music.

SOUP KITCHEN

The Good Friday Soup Kitchen on March 30 takes place as usual in the Community Centre. This year all proceeds will go to Caroline Martin and her children, Tieraclea Park. Caroline’s husband Pat died tragically in an accident before Christmas.

REMEMBERIN­G THOMAS MACGREEVY

Four years after he retired as Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, Thomas MacGreevy died in Dublin on March 16, 1967, the eve of St.Patrick’s Day. In her memoir ‘My Place’ the late Sr. Columba Finucane, F,C.J., Tarbert recalled that in a semi-private audience with poet Brendan Kennelly, the late Pope John Paul 11 asked him where he was from. When Brendan told him and enlarged to include Tarbert, the astonished Polish Pope said "I know Tarbert, I studied the poems of Thomas MacGreevy"–two poets rememberin­g another kindred spirit.

GAA LOTTO

Saturday Night’s Lotto was held in the Mochi Chinese Restaurant. €25 winners each were Jeremiah Cregan, U.S.A., Tom and Josette O’Donnell, John Holly, Ahanagran. Other winners €20 Wu, €15 Wendy, €10 Jenny Wu. Next Saturday’s Lotto will be at Savage’s Bar with a Jackpot of €3,750
