Garda Kieran signs off after 35 years

HAVING served his entire garda career in Kerry and as the last remaining Garda to serve in both the old and new Killarney garda stations it is the end of a long and rewarding career for Garda Kieran Mangan.

Garda Mangan has officially retired this week from Killarney Garda Station where he spent much of his career.

In fact his first official posting was to Killarney back in 1982 and he remained in the Kerry Garda Division for his entire 35 year career.

He also served in both Castleisland and Tralee Garda Stations and returned to Killarney in 1999.

For the last 10 years he served with the Crimes Scenes Unit in Killarney, which was a difficult job at times.

For Garda Mangan the variety of the job was what made it so enjoyable and he will miss his career and his colleagues but says he will be staying in Killarney for his retirement.

“The challenge and the wide variety of things you encounter most,” he said.

“I plan to enjoy my retirement now.” Garda Mangan is originally from Cork but has been adopted by Kerry having served here for 35 years.

He is the last remaining Garda of the present Killarney Garda Force in Killarney Garda Station to have served in both the old station on New Street and the new station in New Road so his departure also marks the end of an era for the Killarney Garda Division. is what I enjoyed
