Germans turn up to see O’Mahony’s Tuesday treble

-

THE first signs of the new tourist season were in evidence at Tralee on Tuesday night of last week when, despite rather unfavourable weather, a busload of Germans turned up to boost what was a rather small attendance.

The Germans will be turning up in much bigger numbers as the year progresses and, while the upstairs area wasn’t yet open to accommodate them, that will now be changing.

The Germans are obviously a good source of additional revenue for the track and, especially on the Tuesday nights, they bring a bit of extra life to the place that is needed.

Those who turned up last week wouldn’t have had much of an idea about the greyhounds that were running or the people who were involved with them, but, for the regulars, it was a night of more than ordinary achievement.

There were a number of reasons for that, chief amongst them being the fact that Millstreet owner, Donal G O’Mahony, pulled off a terrific treble. There was also the fact that the Ger Reidy-trained Lee Smasher was winning his fifth race on the trot, which is a hell of an achievement, and, to nicely embellish it all, a three-timer was completed by the Pat McMahon-trained Send It Clouds.

Donal G O’Mahony initiated his treble in the third race (A4 525) with Millridge Dame, which won by a neck from Ballyhone Spirit in 29.38, and he followed up by winning the fifth race (also A4 525) with Millridge Zephyr, which beat Took The Rocket by three lengths in 29.31.

The treble was completed in the seventh race (A7 525) by Millridge Pedro, which won a good battle to the line by a neck from Teemore Duke in 30.21.

In relation to the five-in-a-row completed by Lee Smasher, this fellow again brought exceptional early acceleration into play to gain control of race no.6 (A5 525) and he hit the line two lengths ahead of the strong-finishing Lassa Excitement in a fastest of the night 28.87.

Send It Clouds completed his three-timer in the eighth race (A4 525) and also did so from the front on his way to a three-length victory over yt another Donal G O’Mahony runner, Millridge Miss. The time was 29.24.

Other winners were Manhattan Chimes, 29.43; Broadmill Ward, 30.02; Fairy Dust, 29.70; Samba Style, 29.45; Spirit Makruma, 29.73.
