THE BRIDEWELL
Congratulations and best wishes of the community to the Management and Staff of Tarbert Bridewell on celebrating its 25th .Anniversary as featured in last week’s Kerryman. The impressive cut-stone Museum, Visitor Centre and Tourist information stop we see today vindicates the decision taken by Tarbert Development Association and the Restoration group in 1988 to purchase and restore what was then a derelict eye-sore. Some people at the time felt that the building should be demolished because it symbolised a link to a former time of British occupation but thankfully more enlightened minds saw it not alone as part of Tarbert’s story but as an asset with tourism and employment potential, which it has proved to be to-day.

ST.PATRICK’S DAY PARADE
This year’s parade which took place after Mass on the Feast day was deemed to be the biggest and best ever. A lot of effort went into the preparation of the various colourful floats and mile buíochas to everybody who participated in the march to the Bridewell led by a suitably attired St. Patrick. Thanks to the community groups, stewards and everybody who helped to make the event such a success on a very cold but dry day. At the finale there was on-stage musical entertainment on the big trailer. Some 13 entries were registered and this year there was an international dimension when for the first time the flag of the People’s Republic of China was on parade in Tarbert. Those taking part included GAA Junior and Senior, Parent and Toddler Group, Wishing Tree Pre-school, Youth Club, Pioneers, Fairy Trail, Post Office, Community Games, Johnny Mulvihill, Fright Night, Macra na Feirme, Mochi Chinese Restaurant and the Swanky Bar.
WINDOW DISPLAY
Different themes were highlighted in the three window displays for the National Holiday in the Priomh Sráid. The Tidy Towns window with its crocheted shamrocks and emphasis on Tidy Tarbert Together highlighted the need for care of our environment. There was a reminder of the Conscious cup campaign and the stark fact that over 1 million non bio-degradable plastic cups go to landfill every year. Coolahan’s window would make a worthy winner in the ‘ An Fhuinneog is Gaelai’ competition with its emphasis on the promotion of Irish games, culture, music and language. The Tarbert in the centre link between Luimneach agus Ciarraí was highlighted by the ‘artist in residence’. Helen’s window featured four happy campers suitably attired in the county and national colours who had stopped off for a make over on their way to Cheltenham. Well done to all concerned.
