Lios Póil secure semi-final berth

-

COUNTY JFC GROUP 2 ROUND 1

Cromane 0-8 Lios Póil 1-15

LIOS Póil qualified for a place in the semi-finals with this victory over Cromane in Farranfore on Saturday evening.

Cromane, in the end, could have few complains as the West Kerry side pushed on decisively in the final quarter. Cromane, however, will feel that they were well in the game up until that point.

With 45 minutes gone, Cromane were trailing by 0-6 to 1-6 – just a kick of a ball. Lios Póil then hit four points in as many minutes to put the game beyond the Mid Kerry men.

Cromane’s attacking threat was blunted in the second period as only Darren Houlihan troubled the scoreboard, one from play in the 50th minute to cut the gap to six, 0-7 to 1-10.

In the last ten minutes Cromane tried a few things to get some goals, that would have gotten them back in the game, but Lispole stood firm kicking five points to our one in that period.

Lispole had started the game very well and led by 1-4 to 0-1 after just eight minutes (Donnchadh Walsh kicking Cromane’s first point in the fouth minute).

Cromane were slow out of the blocks, but once they settled we started to get on top and we kicked four points in a row: three Paul Patrick O’Sullivan points (two frees) and a Darren Houlihan free.

This scoring flurry cut the gap to two, 0-5 to 1-4, after 18 minutes. Both sides then had some wayward shooting (hitting four wides each) before Tom Kavanagh, Lispole’s goalscorer, and Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, with his third free of the half, ended the half’s scoring with Cromane down by two at the break: 0-6 to 1-5.

A pointed Cathal Ó Suilleabháin free for Lios Póil was the only score of the opening 15 minutes of the second half to stretch their lead to three.

At this stage it looked as if the game would go down to the wire. However, Cromane faded out of the game in the last quarter.

Cordal 3-18 Kilgarvan 0-10

THIS second round Junior Championship match at John Mitchels ground between Cordal and Kilgarvan was a one sided affair.

Cordal charged into a 1-6 to 0-3 lead thanks to an excellent worked goal from Eamon Nolan and points from Philip Griffin his cousin Philip O’Connor(2) and Brian Reidy and another from Eamon Nolan Kilgarvan reply from the hardworking Patrick O’Shea and Donal O’Sullivan.

A goal from Brian Reidy and two points from the same man and another point from O’Connor made the halftime score 2-9 to 0-3. Kilgarvan made a fight of it for ten minutes in second half with four points to make it 2-9 to 0-7, but with Johnny O’Connor and Sean O’Connell driving matters from the back-line, Cordal added another 1-9 before the big whistle to Kilgarvan’s three points to round out the game and get their first points on the board.
