Autism Golf event proves a real Classic

- By TADHG EVANS

MORE than 120 people took part in this year’s Autism Golf Classic in Beaufort – but while there was much celebration for the winning team of Joe McCarthy, Timmy O’Keeffe, and John O’Donoghue, Friday’s event was never really about the competitive side of things.

The contest involved 42 teams of three, raising funds to help facilitate private therapies at St Francis’ Special School. Brigitta Looney has organised many events over the years for these causes, but she was quick to remind The Kerryman how crucial Madeleine Murphy’s involvement was. She was equally grateful to her father-in-law, Sonny Looney, whose knowledge of golf was instrumental in organising such a successful event.

“I was thrilled with the day, and I want to thank our sponsors, the teams who took part, the golf club, and the many others who helped out. If I named all of them, I’d be going on forever!” she said.

“We had the students of the school there on the day, and they were able to enjoy a bouncing castle, food, treats, and a few golf lessons through the Ernie Els Autism Golf Programme!”

While Brigitta said she has “an idea of how much was raised”, she said the significant sum will be announced at a later date as donations are still coming in.

A further touch of class was to be seen with a raffle after the event, with well-known figures such as Michael Healy-Rae and Kerry Rose Breda O’Mahony present to help out.

“I was just delighted with how well it all went,” Brigitta added.
