Buddies for life, Fybough NS and Mens Shed

- By TADHG EVANS

ANNAGH-BASED KC Men’s Shed have presented a colourful treat to the children of Fybough National School, handing over a handmade Buddy Bench, to much delight.

Designed and put together by the shed’ members, the materials used were sponsored by Boyles of Killorglin. The idea behind the piece is to provide a place of solace to any child who feels in anyway frightened, lonely or sad, offering a chance for some to reach out and provide company, a chat, or support.

“The idea originally came from a request from Kiltallagh National School in Castlemaine for a kids bench which our shed duly obliged,” KC Men’s Shed Chairperson Martin Greenwood said. “This was followed by making our second bench for St Joseph’s NS in Castlemaine.

“Fybough NS are recipients of our third colourful Buddy Bench and hopefully it will help pupils thrive during their school years around the area of mental health and caring for others.”

Member David Foley is crucial to the design of the benches, and Martin pointed him out for particular praise. The initiative itself is part of a positive mental health school programme called ‘Buddy Bench Aware’ which encourages friendship and aims to tackle loneliness on playgrounds.

The shed meets every Wednesday from 8pm and offers a range of activities and other opportunities to socialise. To contact the group, phone (086) 228 8313, search for the KC Men’s Shed Facebook page, or just drop in on a Wednesday evening.
