Young concern

- BY DIARMUID SHEEHAN

KERRY senior football selector Mikey Sheehy is optimistic that Kerry will have a full squad to pick from when Championship time comes around with Kilian Young the only player of concern right now.

Speaking at the official launch on the Munster SFC and SHC at Bunratty Folk Park on Monday, Sheehy said: “(Young) has had a long-standing groin thing that has been very slow but he is back training anyway doing a little bit of work and everyone else is back thank God. We will be hoping that Killian will be fine come championship time but I wouldn’t be putting my house on it just yet. He hasn’t had any contact or physical football as of yet, but the rest seem okay right now.”

Young’s troubles go back further than many people thought as the South Kerry man picked up his current injury in early 2017.

“Killian got hurt it in the (National) League game in Tralee against Mayo last year but he rehabed it and played in the Championship although he was never right, it was always bothering him. It is one of those things that there is very little you can do with, it is just time really,” Sheehy added.

Sheehy had better news with regard to Anthony Maher as the Duagh midfielder’s recovery seems to be complete.

“He is training away, he is good really and we are happy with him,” Sheehy explained. “Donnchadh Walsh and Kieran Donaghy are back after extended breaks to add more fire-power to a side that look strong all over the pitch.

“Donaghy played basketball with the Warriors the whole winter so he came back fit and in good condition – he has also played a few club games and is doing nicely in training.

“Donnchadh is just a freak of nature really in relation to his fitness – he is a guy that never goes out of condition. He is one of these Duracell bunnies, he never stops. He has come back very fresh and is going really good in training.

“The April month for clubs turned out grand. A lot of players played three games and some played five games and, touch wood, most of them came out injury free. So that period is now put to bed so we will look forward from here.”
