WINDOW ON THE PAST

Nowhere is the power and pomp of the Catholic Church in early 20th. century rural Ireland better illustrated than in a report published by the Limerick Chronicle of the closing night, 5th. July 1903 of a three week parish mission held in Tarbert. The Mission was conducted by two Holy Ghost priests. Clergy, bands, choirs and people from the neighbouring parishes of Ballylongford and Glin were also in attendance. As a very large crowd was expected and the seating capacity of the church was limited to around 300 people it was decided to hold the closing ceremony outdoors in the fields in front of the presbytery.

The newspaper reported ‘The closing ceremony took place in front of the Parochial house where a temporary altar had been erected. The young men of the town had the entrance gate to the church and the field gates beautifully decorated with evergreens and flowers. The young ladies of the town decorated the altar. Glin District School attended with the Boys Brass Band of that school and with the School Choir, girls and boys. The Ballylongford Choir was also in attendance. After the renewal of the Baptismal Vows the procession, consisting of over 4,000 persons started from the parochial house. The procession marched two deep, with the banner bearers and those in charge in the centre. It was a most impressive and imposing sight, the massive serpentine files of people wending their way through the undulating pasture fields and through the principal streets of the town. The ceremony closed with Benediction of the Most holy Sacrament and the Papal Blessing. Afterwards the Missioners bade goodbye to a large number of parishioners who deeply regret their departure’

While the reported attendance figures seem high it is well to bear in mind that the Census of 1901 listed 6,856 people inhabiting 1,356 houses in the parish. Scoil Náisiúnta received the sacrament, Amy Stack,Caoimhe Galvin, Millie Dore, Isobella Romo, Kasey Murphy, Mark Callanan and Michael O’Connor. Guímid gach rath ar na daoine óga.
