BANNA CLEAN UP FINDS A WIDE RANGE OF ITEMS

-

THE hardworking members of the Banna Coastcare group were out in force on Sunday morning, giving the scenic beach its usual clean up.

Over 30 bags of litter were collected along the beach in just over an hour.

The group, which was created by local woman Rachel Geary, cleans the beach at two to three times a year and they always find one or two items each time which raise a few eyebrows.

Among this current crop of dumped items were the usual marine litter including fishing lines, nets and rope, the usual terrestrial liter such as plastic bottles, wrappers, cans, Glass bottles and plasric bags and cigarette butts.

Finally, there were a few more unsual items which the group found.

“There were toothbrushes, a handbag, a duvet, coat hangers, tracksuits, baby bottles, a couple pairs of underpants,” said Rachel, speaking to The Kerryman on Tuesday.

“There was also a dead goat and seal found there as well. They were found further up the beach by the Banna Rescue team,” Rachel continued.

This was the one of the biggest turn outs yet for the Coastcare group and Rachel said it was great to see so many old and new faces coming out to help keep the area clean.

“It was a fantastic day. The turnout was super. We have people who have been coming every year and we even have a little girl who has been here a few times with her mom and she wants to try and get her school friends involved. It’s all positive,” she finished.

Well done everyone!
