Evening throw-in for Munster Final a lack of respect for such an important game

-

SIR, The GAA championships are well under way and we have enjoyed some fantastic hurling encounters. There have been some startling results. Tipperary and Waterford are both out of the race; who would have predicted such an outcome ?

The football championship is largely going as expected, except for a few exceptions. We have seen nothing as exciting as the hurling games but Fermanagh have made the Ulster Final , a surprise surely. Carlow and Waterford have made their mark as well. The Tyrone and Meath qualifier was the best for excitement and, indeed, controversy .

We had our expected win over Clare and our neighbours Cork await us in the Munster Final. However, the staging of a Munster Football on a Saturday night, June 23, at 7pm seems to me to show a total lack of respect for such an important game.

It almost smacks of a ‘just get rid of it ‘ attitude.

Surely it deserves the same respect and importance of the other three provincial finals? Would they be played on a Saturday night ?

It will be a very late night for Kerry supporters trying to get out of Cork and head home on the N22. Many will be lucky to get home by midnight. Saturday doesn’t suit many supporters and will surely affect the attendance at the minor game.

Availing of normal rail and bus services is surely not a viable option for those who rely on such services when the final is played at three or three thirty.

I am surprised that the Kerry County Board agreed to what I consider to be the downgrading of our provincial final. Both the team and the supporters have been disrespected.

Sincerely,

Gerry Cournane,

Tralee.
