Castle suffered their first home defeat in the County League on Sunday afternoon against an impressive Firies side. Playing against the breeze in the first half, Anton Kelliher opened the scoring for the home team with a point from a free. Firies responded and went ahead on 7 minutes before Alan Fitzgerald converted another free for Castle. Firies then got into their stride and raced into a 3 point lead midway through the first half to put them 5 points to 2 ahead with points from Pádraig de Brún and Donnchadh O’Sullivan. Castle’s defence was under pressure with the pace of the Firies forwards causing problems despite the best efforts of Brandon Hoare and Joe O’Connor.

Alan Fitzgerald kept Castle in touch with another free but Firies always seemed to respond and led by 4 points with 20 minutes on the clock. Another Anton Kelliher free and a nice score from corner back Gavin O’Connor off his left foot saw Castle reduce the gap to 2. But a killer blow came just before half time when Firies played some route one football and a 40 metre pass was received by the Firies full forward and he duly finished to the net. That left the half time score at Firies 1-08 Castle 0-05. Castle did start the second half much the brighter and scores from Timmy Moriarty and Colm O’Mahony reduced the gap to 4. But again Firies responded with 2 more scores. Alan Fitz Made it 1-10 to 0-08 with 40 minutes played. Adam O’Donnell, now operating at midfield and coming more and more into the game got his first score of the game but by now Firies had a commanding lead of 1-12 to 0-09. Captain Brandon Hoare kicked over a nice score and then Castle were thrown a lifeline when a foot-block in the square by a Firies defender resulted in a penalty for the home side. Up stepped Alan Fitz and he duly dispatched it to the net. Castle now began to play with real purpose and went after the match and were rewarded with their efforts when a high ball was sent into the Firies square. Maurice Slattery reacted quickest and finished to the net. Game on! With only one point now between the sides, incredibly it looked like Castle might get something from the game. But, Firies to their credit responded with a point from Pádraig de Brún to put them 2 ahead with time almost up. Jack Sherwood then killed off the game completely when he broke through the Castle rearguard and the former inter-county man made no mistake and raised the second green flag of the afternoon for the East Kerry men. Final score Castle 2-11 Firies 2-15. Next up is an away match versus Skellig Rangers on Saturday June 16th at 7.30pm.
