Snap-happy number crunching Fybough pupils
FYBOUGH NS sixth class students Ciara O’Shea and Jade Kelleher were two of six pupils short-listed in the Under 11 category in the National Maths Eyes Competition. Principal Catherine Ní Mhuircheartaigh said that the school is delighted with the girls’ achievements.
The school had held its own Maths Eyes competition two years ago. Catherine said they were so impressed by the creativity shown by the students, that they entered them into the national competition last November.
“The categories were divided by age and there were seven hundred entries submitted in this category.
“So, when we heard that two of our students made it to the prize winning ceremony, we couldn’t have been prouder.
“It was exciting to attend the ceremony in Dublin and it was attended by the Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton. It’s a great achievement and we are delighted for them.”
Entries for the competition must be a photo taken by the student of something and this must be accompanied by a tagline that highlights the maths they see in the photo.
“It is such a wonderful concept as it encourages children to recognise and identify maths in the environment and capture it in a photo. Creating a clever tag-line allows the children to explore the language around maths and it makes it accessible to all students. Even parents enjoy the challenge. Our children get excited now about maths and they often say they are using their ‘maths eyes’ when they solve a problem.”
