It’s fun, it’s famous and Ring of Kerry Cycle is worth a fortune to charities

WHAT began with a group from Killarney having an idea to cycle the Ring of Kerry 35 years ago, has come a very long way in becoming Ireland’s biggest one–day charity event.

The countdown is now on for the 35th annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, which takes place July 7 and will raise over €1 millon for 15 charities this year.

Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle PRO Cathal Walshe said they are busy gearing up for another year of fun – but the overriding aim is to make this day of fun for the participating cyclists benefit deserving causes throughout Kerry and beyond.

“The Charity Cycle has come so far in the last 35 years and this year is a very special year for the event,” Cathal said.

“We are very proud of the event itself, those who take part and anyone who contributes in any way.

“Killarney are delighted to have the event this year as they don’t have the Munster Final! The town is going to be rocking that weekend, hopefully aided by good weather,” he added.

Each person who crosses the finish line will be rewarded with a medal. There are also special jerseys for this year’s cyclists.

“We have raised €15 million to date for 150 charities through the event. It is a very unique event too, many people think it is a race but it isn’t, it is an event for charity.

“The main thing for anyone taking part is to raise as much as possible and take your time when cycling,” said Cathal.

“It is so special to welcome cyclists from all over the world to celebrate the 35th Ring of Kerry with us” he added. “We are heading towards 7,000 people taking part this year and anyone interested can still register on our website.”
