Run in the sun in welcoming Kilmoyley
RUNNERS enjoyed the very best of the Kerry scenery this past Sunday as they took part in the Kilmoyley Tidy Towns 5km and 10km run.
Now into its sixth year, this year’s run has again been hailed as a great success by organisers – with over 220 people taking part in the Tidy Towns fundraising event.
“It was a huge success. We were well up on our numbers and, of course, the weather really added to the occasion; the views were absolutely stunning out there,” said organiser Billy O’Connor, speaking to The Kerryman on Monday.
“There was actually a group of people that had come from outside north Kerry. They did their 10k run which was two laps of the area, and they then decided to do two more laps after this again. They said that the first two times, they didn’t get the proper look at the views and didn’t get to appreciate them fully, so they went around again,” he laughed.
The 5km route started at Kilmoyley Community Centre and saw runners head towards School Cross, turning right to Lerrig Cross, up to Lerrig Water Tower, passing the beautiful Lerrig Lough, onto Kilmoyley Sportsfield, turning right towards Kilmoyley Church and right again, where they turned towards the finishing line at the Community Centre.
The 10km route was two laps of this same course.
Derek Griffin was the winner of the 10k in a time of 34:22, while Colm McCarthy was the 5km run winner in a time of 17:34.
All the money raised from the event will go towards furthering the areas Tidy Towns plans, which this year are focusing on the area of pollination and the importance of bees. Bee-keeper Tom O’Sullivan gave his time freely on the day to give demonstrations on bees.
