Dooks emerge as qualifiers for their section of Irish Junior Cup
DOOKS emerged as qualifiers from their section of the Irish junior Cup played at Killorglin over the weekend to advance to the west Munster area final where they await the winners of Ballybunion versus Doneraile which is being played today [Wednesday] at Ballybunion’s Cashen course and of course my famous predictions went right out of the window.
Beginning at Killorglin on Saturday morning, Killorglin caused something of a shock beating Killarney (3-2), Dooks beat Waterville (3.5 to 1.5), Newcastlewest beat Glengarriff (3.5 to 1.5) and Kenmare beat Berehaven (3-2).
In the afternoon, Dooks beat Killorglin (4-1) in the local derby, while Newcastlewest beat Kenmare (4-1) with Dooks going on to beat Newcastlewest in Sunday’s final also by 4-1.
There was a bit of confusion on the other side of the draw as Castlegregory was meant to host the other qualifying section but apparently were unable to do so because of damage to two of their greens and an alternative venue had to be found with Ballybunion Golf Club obliging and offering their Cashen course where Ceann Sibeal beat Castlegregory (4-1), Ballybunion beat Ballyheigue (4-1), Tralee beat Castleisland (4-1) and Doneraile beat Kanturk (3.5 to 1.5).
In round two Doneraile beat Tralee (3-2) but in something of an unusual situation Ceann Sibéal having eliminated Castlegregory in round one gave a walk-over to Ballybunion in Round two for reasons unknown, so Ballybunion the reigning All-Ireland Champions now face Doneraile this afternoon for the right to join Dooks in the West Munster area final with a Munster semi-final spot on offer for the winners.
