ON Saturday, June 30, the Valentia Young Islanders defeated Moyvane by 2-16 to 3-10 at a sun-drenched O’Connor Park, Valentia, in a last-eight County League Division Five encounter.

The division is this year divided into two groups, with four qualifiers advancing from each group for the quarter-finals.

They will now play Asdee in Keel in round two.

The set-up from here is as follows:

Round Two (July 14 and 15): Round 2A: four round one winners play against each other.

Round 2B: four round one losers play against each other. Open draw and neutral venues apply.

Round 2A winners are promoted and contest the divisional final on July 28 and 29. Round 2B losers are gone. Round3 (July 28 and 29): Round 2A losers play Round 2B winners. The winners of those matches will play each other for a final promotion spot. Extra-time and neutral venues apply to all games, including the final.

Valentia team v Moyvane: Richard Quigley, John Lynch, John Curran, Concubhair Guiney, Senan Lynch, Paul O’Sullivan (0-1), Ciarán O’Donoghue, Paul O’Connor (0-3), Rory Keating (0-1), Jim Lynch (0-2), Andy Quigley (0-2, 0-1f ), Darragh Murphy, David Hussey, John Shanahan (2-7), Junior Murphy.

Sub introduced: Steve Sheehan.

Also, well done to Patrick O’Donoghue of Chapeltown (Caol), who came to the rescue with his innovative scoreboard numbers due to the failure of the electronic scoreboard. Patrick, in a high-scoring game, was a busy man climbing the ladder to exchange digits.

In other news, the Valentia Young Islanders GAA club would like to express sincere sympathy to the family of Michael John O’Shea of Castlegregory, who recently passed away. He was instrumental in an advisory and supervisory capacity in the development of the playing surface of O’Connor Park in Chapeltown back in the year 2000 when Mícheál Lyne was chairman.
