Cash raised on Deane/Wrenn walk passes €100k
THE Mike Deane/Jamie Wrenn Memorial Walk had its eighth staging between Tralee and Castlegregory on Saturday, and co-organiser Mary Lynch, who has worked with Sandra Finn to make the event a reality, said this renewal brought the total funds raised over the years to over €100,000.
More than 200 participants started out from the Aquadome on the morning to remember Mike and Jamie, who were both from Castlegregory. The walk has raised funds for almost a decade for cancer charities, and this year’s beneficiaries were Recovery Haven. Of the funds raised, €2,000 will also go to fund defibrillators in Tralee.
The walkers proceeded by the Canal to Blennerville Bridge and then O’Shea’s in Curraheen, before enjoying a barbecue at the Junction Bar in Camp, who also provided teas and coffees, Mary explained.
It was on then to the Seven Hogs in Aughacasla, before another barbecue at Fitzgerald’s Bar in the late Mike and Jamie’s home patch, Castlegregory.
“We had lovely entertainment by High Tide, a band who gave their time free to the cause,” Mary said. “We were helped out by the Red Cross and two fantastic guards, Aidan O’Mahony and Trish Fitzpatrick.
“I’d like to mention John James O’Connor, who carried much of the gear the walkers had by tractor and trailer. Thanks, also, to Deane’s Coaches, Kennedy’s Coaches, and Glenside Travel for providing transport.
“There were so many people involved and it’s impossible to mention everyone, so I’d like to thank everyone who took part and helped out.”
