KERRY County Council (KCC) said it is placing precautionary signage at locations around Lough Leane after identifying algal growth along part of the lake’s shoreline.

Erecting signage follows protocol, and the local authority is advising those visiting the shoreline to be cautious and not to allow dogs enter the water.

A council spokesperson said that the warm and humid conditions experienced so far this summer could continue for another while. These conditions may give rise to further algal blooms, and KCC will continue to monitor this.

“It should be stressed however that Lough Leane is currently considered to be in very good condition,” a spokesperson said, “and that the development of algal growths is due to the exceptionally warm weather that has been experienced over the last few weeks.”

“During the months of May to September...an algal bloom or darkish scum may appear on or close to the shoreline.

“Please exercise caution. You are advised to avoid contact with this bloom or scum, as it may cause skin irritation. Keep all dogs away from the water and shoreline scums.” “WILLKOMMEN in Tralee” will replace the traditional ‘Céad Míle Fáilte’ during this year’s Rose festival when Oktoberfest Tralee – a wunderbar addition to the festival – takes place at the Festival Dome on Saturday August 18.

For one night only, festive folk in Tralee – locals and visitors alike – will embrace their inner- German and experience a Germanic evening to remember at Oktoberfest at the Rose of Tralee.

Daryl Cronin, organiser of Oktoberfest events in Ireland, said Tralee is “all set to put its own special spin on Munich’s world famous festival.”

The Dome will be transformed into a mini-Bavaria, complete with amazing beer gardens, huge beer hall serving a range of Oktoberfest beers and delicious traditional Bavarian cuisine including traditional bratwursts, rotisserie chickens, freshly-baked pretzels, gingerbread hearts and much more.”

Oktoberfest in the Dome will host authentic Oompah Brass Bands who will entertain the masses with their toe-tapping, thigh-slapping, oompah entertainment and traditionally-dressed Damen und Herren in Lederhosen will serve the finest Bavarian festive beers and food.

The Managing Director of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Anthony O’Gara, said the event will be an exciting addition to the festival.

“We are always interested in introducing new ideas to our entertainment line-up, especially in the Dome and we are excited about welcoming the Oktoberfest to Tralee. It will enhance an already superb festival programme by bringing the very best of Bavaria to Tralee,” he said.

“Oktoberfest clearly appeals to a wide audience, such has been the demand for tickets already. The event will provide a chance for our many German visitors to enjoy a feeling of home, while our guests from other parts of the world, corporate groups and locals will also enjoy an alternative cultural and social event in the heart of Tralee Town,” said Mr O’Gara.

Tickets and table reservations are on sale now. The event is expected to sell out well in advance so it is advised to book your tickets and table reservations in advance to avoid disappointment.
