Abbeydorney table quiz to raise funds for cancer support group

- By KATHLEEN O’SULLIVAN

MANY of us don’t realise the commitment that a community-based, voluntary service requires until we have first-hand experience, sometimes in unfortunate circumstances. For Bernadette O’Sullivan, she has seen the importance of such services, as her husband, Christy, avails of the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus service that brings him to Cork for his cancer treatment.

To give back to the service that has done so much for them, Bernadette, from Abbeydorney, along with her family, will host a table quiz night in aid of the Kerry Cancer Support Group’s Kerry Cork Health Link Bus.

“It’s a fantastic service; it would have been even tougher for us without it,” Bernadette said.“We drove up ourselves one day as Christy’s appointment was very early in the morning. That journey itself is difficult to do. One of the main symptoms of Christy’s treatment, radiation, is exhaustion, so we need a service like this that makes it as easy as possible on those being treated.

“They provide everything in their power for people – driving them right up to the door and providing water. They really care. They rely on donations, so it’s important for people to recognise what they do, and donate.”

Bernadette thanks all those in the Kerry Cancer Support Group, and everyone who is helping with organising the event in any way: Bill Maunsell for providing the venue and catering; Helen Horan for making the cake for the guess ‘ the cake weight challenge’; everyone donating spot prizes; and Geraldine and Mary O’Sullivan, who are collecting the spot prizes; and Christy’s god-daughter, Christina Stack, who is donating trophies.

There will also be a free bus service provided by Patrick Dalton – from Lixnaw to Abbeydorney, and back – on the night. Anyone who is interested can still donate prizes for the spot raffle.

The launch of the table quiz took place last Monday, and the event itself is on Friday, August 10, at 8pm in the Abbeydorney Sports Complex. Proceeds on the night will go towards the running of the Health Link Bus.
