Templenoe sees Valentia show its class once again
AFTER a brilliant display in Cromane the previous week, Valentia’s rowers were again in top form over the weekend, taking five victories over the course of a great day’s racing in Templenoe.
The islanders’ men, ladies, boys, and girls all left with silverware in a superb show of consistency across the many categories.
Valentia won the under-16 boys competition, going on to win the under-14 mixed equivalent, as well as the under-18 girls, senior ladies, and senior men’s races also.
Outside of this, there was a good variety of winners, starting with the Sneem under-12 girls in the day’s opener.
Cromane were the winners in the under-14 girls race, with Callinafercy winning the under-16 equivalent.
Killorglin’s under-18 boys also left with winners’ silverware, with the Liberator of Cahersiveen taking the day’s prestigious seine boat title.
“The Templenoe Rowing Club did a great job looking after the clubs on Sunday last, and on the water we had some super rowing,” Mary B Teahan told The Kerryman after the event.
“If you were looking for an early start, brilliant excitement, total commitment, and desire to win, this regatta had it all.
“Next weekend we have two regattas. For the crews of South and Mid Kerry, all roads lead to Callinafercy on Saturday evening, July 28, with the draw for the buoys down for 4pm. The first race of the day is the Under-12s at 4.30pm, followed by eight four-oar races.
“The Seine Boat is down for 7.30pm, and there will be six boats in this race, the biggest race in years,” she added.
This Sunday, preparations for next month’s All-Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships in Wexford step up another notch, with Sive hosting a one-design regatta, a boat design that’s not traditional in these parts, but the kind used in the All-Irelands.
Patrons are asked to be there for 10am ahead of the 11am start at Waterville Lake, with entry via the GAA field side.
