“THE life and death of each of us has its influences on others”, a line from the funeral mass of John Patrick Griffin of Lisardboula, Tralee which would adequately reflect the life, times and humility of this much loved and respected man.

Tears were shed amid smiles and happy reflections in Ballymacelligott Parish following the passing of John Patrick on Sunday 8th of July.

Born in Tralee to parents Thomas and Ellen Griffin on March 7th 1934, he dedicated his working life to the family farm. Better known to family and friends as Jackie, he lived life to the full embracing the joys, sadness and success of his neighbours and wide circle of friends in his beloved community.

As a young man he loved dancing and was highly regarded as an accomplished Irish dancer. His other passion was sport and in particular the GAA. He was a loyal follower of Kerry teams and remembered with fondness and pride all the great players going back to the 1940’s.

Reading was another lifetime pastime. He loved books and his home contained a large store of them. An avid reader, he looked forward to the weekly newspapers and his favourite read was “Ireland’s Own”.

A deeply religious man, Jackie lived by the gospel. He was a regular church goer and communicant until ill health prevented him from attending church.

However he still insisted on attending confession on a monthly basis. He was honoured to have Noreen attend his home with weekly communion.

Fr. Pat Crean Lynch P.P. Ballymacelligott and Sister Bernadine were regular visitors to Jackie and he greatly appreciated the time they spent with him

Ill health saw Jackie move in with his niece Maura and for more than 8 years he received loving and dedicated care from Maura and his grand-nephew Tommy. He was also loved and cared for by his carers John, Darren, Lawrence and Aidan.

When his health deteriorated further, and it was no longer possible for him to be cared for at home, he moved to St.Columbanus Nursing home where he lived in the loving and tender care of the wonderful staff, nurses and doctors. He spent 15 very happy months at this wonderful facility

Jackie will be sadly missed and forever loved by his sister Eileen, nephews and nieces, extended family, many friends and kind neighbours especially the Dennehy and Duggan families. May he rest in peace
