BRUFF’S Liam O’Donovan defeated National Strokeplay Champion Deerpark’s Damien Fleming by a single stroke last Sunday to retain the Danny Broderick Memorial Senior Scratch Cup in Castleisland after 54 holes. The Limerick player had a tournament total of 22 under par, one clear of Fleming on 21 under with Aidan O’Connor from the host club third on 19 under par. The Last 18 prize was won by Denis O’Sullivan from Cork meanwhile with seven under par.

The Intermediate competition was won by Deerpark’s James Fleming with five under par, one ahead of his club-mate Kieran Fitzpatrick who finished on four under.

Noel Lee from the host club was the winner of the Junior event, the Lorna Looney-Brosnan Cup, with a score four under par, four clear of Cork’s Mark Roche in second on level par.

Julianne Broderick from the host club won the Ladies Senior prize with the Junior Ladies prize won by Tralee’s Lisa O’Connor.

Last Saturday, meanwhile, saw the Munster U-16 Strokeplay Championships take place in Rocklodge, Co Cork with Deerpark’s Cillian Courtney finishing as Runner-Up in the Boys 10-13 grade, with a score of 113, six shots behind the winner Glenn Towler of St Annes on 107. There was better news for Cillian afterwards though as it was announced he would be part of the first ever Irish U-16 Pitch & Putt team to take part in an International Challenge with Catalonia in Seapoint, Co Louth on Tuesday August 28th.

The County Board congratulates Cillian on becoming the fourth player from Kerry to be chosen to represent Ireland in Pitch & Putt after Deerpark club-mates Derry and Conor McCarthy along with Tralee’s Jonathon Goodall have done so in the past.

This weekend sees the National U-16 Matchplay take place in Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath with plenty of interest for the Deerpark club while Ger Casey from the Killarney club is also entered to take part in the National O-55s Senior Strokeplay Championships in McDonagh, Co Kildare this Sunday.

We wish all concerned the very best of luck.
