HURLING SEMI-FINAL

Sunday is a huge day for Limerick hurling as our senior hurlers take on neighbours Cork in Croke Park in the all-Ireland semi-final. This will be a massive test for this young team but if they produce the form shown up to now it should get them over the line. The best of luck to the players and management for the occasion.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Mountcollins 2-7, Galbally 2-14. Round three of the County Intermediate football championship was played in Fenagh on Sunday evening where Mountcollins were beaten by a better team. There was little between the two sides in the opening half as the local side led by 2-2 to seven points at the break.

The winners made the most of their chances in the second half to collect the points. Without a win to date in the championship Mountcollins will now need to win their next game if they have any hope of making the play-off stages.

The team line-out was, Batt Dillane, Timothy Walsh, Jamie Lenihan, Bernard McCarthy, Mike Dillane, Jeremiah Moroney (1pt), Timothy Begley, Anthony Hartnett (1pt), Mathew Shorthall, Conor Moroney (1-1), Tom McCarthy (1-2), Pa Delee (1pt), Pádraig

DAN PADDY ANDY FESTIVAL

Preparations for our local Dan Paddy Andy Festival are now well under way. There is great interest in the two big Country Music names we have invited to celebrate Dan’s 21st with us. Pat McKenna has been seen in concert in Kerry previously, but this will be the first opportunity his legion of fans in the Kingdom will have of dancing to the music of the man from Derry. Paddy O’Brien and his mighty band from Waterford are well established as a big name on the social dancing circuit and of course the biggest among his many hits is ‘Marion’s Rose’.

This is a chance to see him sing it live and dance to one of the great sounds and talents of Irish Country music.

All our other great bands who have annually filled the floor of the Festival Marquee are back with us – Stevie Donegan, Mike Condon, Mike Fitzgerald and Southern Pride, Eddie Lee and James Kelliher and Tim Joe and Anne O’Riordan, who will play for our ceili on the Friday night of the August Bank Holiday Weekend. Just a reminder that the Waltzing Competition has been moved to Sunday afternoon this year during the Eddie Lee Band dance. Judge is Michael Murphy. Lovely trophies to be won – but taking part is what it’s all about.

It looks like the 5K/10K Walk/ Run, which was held for the firsttime last year and was such a success, will be been bigger and better this year with the proceeds going to the Kerry Branch of Enable Ireland. Again, lovely first, second and third place trophies in the 5k and 10k with medals for all participants and €50 going to the first male and female of the 10K the Mass Path route for the 5k has been improved this year with part of it now through a Beech tree plantation thanks to a couple of our volunteers. Our thanks to Coillte and to the contractors for guaranteeing us that their works in the area will be completed in time.

At 9 p.m. on Sunday night we have an item called Humour and song. This will feature Peter Casey from Clare, one of the hilarious storytellers from the Irish Rambling House Show and Willie Relihan from Cork, a fabulous balladeer. This event is not to be missed and will be followed by Marquee Dancing to Pat McKenna and Glenshane Country.

Our brochure with the full programme is now widely available with details of all our other events including the Bog Walk, Dog Show, Ger’s Animal Farm and Kids Party Club. You will be spoilt for choice. But the main thing about the festival is the chance it gives people to meet up. Exiles will be back for the event and visitors to Kerry will call by. Be sure to be in the mix.
