1. ROSE OF TRALEE 2018 KICKS OFF THIS WEEKEND

IT’S hard to believe that it’s that time of year again in Tralee as the Internatio­nal Rose Festival prepares to kick off on Friday August 17.

This years event will finish with Midnight Madness on Tuesday August 21; highlights at this years festival include the usual Fashion Show and the Rose Ball while Street Festival entertainm­ent over the four days includes Jake Carter, Big Generator and Hermitage Green.

2. GREAT NIGHT OF DANCING AT KERINS O’RAHILLYS CLUB

IF you’re looking for a different type of night out and a bit of a dance, then make sure to head down to the Kerins O’Rahillys clubhouse on Wednesday nights.

Every Wednesday night from 9pm to 11pm, a new band will perform in the clubhouse; admission on the night is €10

Tonight (August 15) will see the Dermot and Irene Ring band performing while next week (August 22) will see the Dermot Lyons band take to the stage.

3. CELEBRATIO­N OF LIGHT FOR RECOVERY HAVEN

RECOVERY Haven is inviting all members of the public to come down to the Tralee Bay Wetlands on Wednesday August 15 (tonight) for the seventh annual ‘Celebratio­n of Light’.

This event allows those who have been touched by cancer to come together and share their experience­s with others; this years event starts at 8pm with a performanc­e from the Kerry Choral Union which will then be followed by the lighting of the candles.

4. HARVEST FEST ON ITS WAY TO KNOCKNAGOS­HEL

THE fun times continue in Knocknagos­hel this weekend as the village prepares to host its annual Harvest Festival.

Having started last Friday, there is no sign of the festivitie­s slowing down any bit this weekend with activities such as the ‘Pattern Day Sports’ (Wednesday August 15), the village sports/family fun day (Thursday August 16) and a timed 5km run from the community centre (Saturday August 18).

5. GREAT SHOWBANDS NIGHT IN DUAGH

THERE is a great night in store in Duagh later this month when the Duagh Sports complex plays host to the fantastic ‘Bringing back the Showbands Concert’.

Taking place on Thursday August 30, musicians such as Paddy Cole, Linda Martin and Ronan Collins will perform on the night. Doors open at 7:30pm and tickets are €25.

6. ROSE HISTORY ON DISPLAY IN KERRY MU

ROSE of Tralee history will be on show in the Kerry County Museum all this week; visitors will be able to look back through time through old photos, articles and even tiaras worn by winning Roses.

7. ‘GOD HAS NO COUNTRY’ IN LISTOWEL

KILLARNEY actor Dónal Courtney brings his ‘God has no Country’ play to St Johns Theatre in Listowel tonight (Wednesday August 15).

The play tells the story of Kerryman Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, his upbringing and education in Killarney and his defence of those suffering under the tyranny of the Fascists in Rome during The Second World War.

8. ROSE 10K SET TO TAKE PLACE THIS WEEKEND

THERE’S still time for you to book your place in this years Rose 10km run - now into its sixth year.

This years event will take place on Sunday August 19 and will be open to people of all ages and abilities; entry is set at €30 and online entries can be found at the Tralee Internatio­nal Marathon website.

9. STACKS PREP FOR ‘STRICTLY COME DANCING’

NOW into its eight year, the Austin Stacks GAA club are again this month preparing to host their ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ fundraiser.

This years event will take place on Saturday August 25 in the Festival Dome when 14 couples take to the dance floor in a bid to be crowned the nights best dancer.

Tickets for the night are expected to sell out quickly. They will cost €20 and are on sale from club members, Kevin Barry’s shop and Garvey’s Supervalu.

10. GET EXERCISING THIS WEEKEND WITH PARKRUN

WHY not try to head down to take part in one of the many parkruns taking place around Kerry at the weekends?

There are five parkruns in Kerry: Tralee, Killarney, Listowel, Inch Beach and the Tralee junior parkrun.

These free 5km events are run every weekend by volunteers and they have been proven to be extremely popular in improving both physical and mental health.

The Tralee. Listowel and Killarney parkruns are held every Saturday morning from 9:30am onwards while the Tralee Junior parkrun takes place on Sunday at 9:30am - these 2km events are aged for children from 4-14 years old.
