Under starter’s orders at the Glenbeigh Festival

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

DESCRIBED as one of the summer’s best farewell events, final preparations and declarations are at an advanced stage ahead of this weekend’s Glenbeigh Races at Rossbeigh Strand, which is the focal point for top class pony racing.

The festival gets under way on Friday evening when a fancy dress parade takes place in the village. This event never fails in its role of kick-starting what is a great weekend. Also on Friday, at The Red Fox Inn, is the selection of the 2018 Festival Queen. Music in the local bars, hotels and streets is now the norm during the Glenbeigh Races, while it’s a great weekend for families to enjoy as this year there’s the added attraction of a funfair.

Each event ties in with making Glenbeigh Races the success it is as another memorable footnote will be added to a rich history; a history that stretches back to 1924 when the first official recording of horse racing in Rossbeigh was held.

The main race action starts on Saturday at 2pm sharp with a total prize pot of €2,500 up for grabs on day one. The festival marquee will also provide its usual spread of live music, food and drink. Sunday’s action also starts at 2pm with the Glenbeigh Invitational the feature race on the card. Moreover, the Best Dressed Ladies, gents and children’s competition will take place on Sunday. A total prize pot of €5,101 is available on the final day’s racing.

“Entertainment is a huge part of the meeting as it creates a unique atmosphere,” said Glenbeigh Races Committee member, Moira O’Connor.

“The local businesses invest a great deal of effort in making the weekend a good one, and on behalf of the committee I just want to thank all the sponsors and patrons who every year help make the Glenbeigh Races what it is,” she added.
