The sun smiles on Churchill for Spa Fenit Council’s annual heritage day
THE organisers of this year’s heritage day at Churchill’s Old Forge couldn’t possibly have wished for a better day.
On a weekend that saw the return of the wintry weather we’re all so used to Churchill was bathed in sunshine on Saturday as the Spa/Fenit Community Council marked National Heritage Week with their annual heritage open day.
Hundreds of families descended on Churchill to enjoy a sunny afternoon packed with all manner of family fun and entertainment.
Among the many traditional events that visitors young and old could get involved in were sugan chair making; straw hat crafting; knot-making demos; horse shodding, butter churning and even bee keeping.
There were also a few novel events like a nail hammering contests – at which the competition was surprisingly intense – and an exotic animal display.
As well as the usual great singing, music and storytelling there was also the ever popular traditional tractor and Honda run – which drew dozens of entries – and the dog show which is always an annual highlight.
Petrol-heads also had something to enjoy with a stunning Red 1956 Maserati 200s – once driven by motor racing legend Stirling Moss – on display at the Forge for the afternoon.
The spectacular looking sports car certainly provided a striking contrast to the vintage machinery on display around the recently refurbished, and extremely fetching Old Forge building.
All in all it was a wonderful day that rounded out the summer holidays in superb fashion.
