The Kerryman (North Kerry)

What they said

Fergus Fitzmaurice, Lixnaw manager

We’re absolutely over the moon with the win. It probably hasn’t sunk in yet there. We’re just delighted, delighted for everyone in the parish, for our wives, our girlfriends, our moms and dads and for the whole club because sometimes I don’t think we give ourselves enough of credit. We’ve a brilliant club outside there. We’ve unbelievable facilities out there and I’m just delighted for everyone, just over the moon.

We were very worried [before the penalty] to put it in a very politically correct way, but I think we managed the game very well in the second half playing against a gale force wind, we used the ball very well. We went very short with it which isn’t something that’s done very often in Kerry. People would be opposed to it, the more traditionalists, but you have to do it when you’re playing against a gale force wind. I thought the lads were excellent. We were maybe six or seven points up, they got a goal which swung them back into the game and it was tit for tat after that and when Daniel Collins was standing over the penalty... you know that maybe your day was over, but

Martin [Stackpoole] made an unbelievable save and you know they say you have to be kind of half mad to play in goals in hurling in particular and if that was ever in any way true that’s true with Martin as he is half mad!

Shane Brick, Kilmoyley manager

Yeah look massively disappointed. County finals are there to be won and we’ve lost and that’s it. Controversial at the end but at the end of the day when the dust settles Lixnaw are County Champions and that’s that and best of luck to them. I’ve never seen in my life where a penalty-taker steps up to take a penalty and it’s saved and the rebound is scored and there’s a whistle blown. I’ve never seen it in my life, but look those are the tough things you have to take and you just got to regather and dust yourselves down, but it’s incredibly disappointing to end the game on that note.

We can’t question the lads all year. The character they’ve shown in the previous games was tremendous and they’ve shown that again today. They kept fighting to the final whistle. Things probably didn’t work out for us as well as we would have hoped but that still didn’t effect the lads they kept at it and fighting to the final whistle. It’s just really disappointing to lose in that fashion, but again when people are writing that Lixnaw are County Champions and look deservedly so.

A lot of the times in games like this you can hurl better in the breeze with the short ball and runners off the shoulder and that kind of stuff.
