Charities share in €53k from Ring of Beara Cycle

- BY TADHG EVANS

THE Ring of Beara Cycle most certainly captured imaginations again in 2018, with more than 4,200 cyclists from Kerry, Cork, and far, far beyond coming to the region in May.

And just over three months on from the hugely successful staging, four Kenmare charities were last week among six beneficiaries to receive a share in the €53,000 the 2018 cycle raised for good causes.

Committee members presented cheques to the recipients in recent days, with Kenmare Family Resource Centre, Kenmare Special Olympics, Kenmare Special Needs Group, and local St John of Gods services among the beneficiaries.

Castletownbere Community Hospital and Castletownbere Day Care Centre completed the list of recipients.

“I would like to thank all the volunteers without whom this event would not be possible,” organising committee member Darren Lynch said.

“Because of their hard work along with the cyclists we are very pleased to be in a position to make a difference to local charities. We are all looking forward to next year’s event already and being able to contribute again to local charities.”

Registration for the 2019 cycle opens in the coming days from Thursday, September 13, with former participants getting their chance to snap up tickets from September 12. Last year’s event sold out inside 24 hours, the beauty of the 110-kilometre and 140-kilometre routes – taking in locations such as Ardgroom, Eyeries, Allihies, Castletownbere, Adrigole, Glengarrif, and Kenmare – proving too beautiful to resist.

Numbers for the May 26 cycle will again be capped at 4,200, with the usual party atmosphere accompanying hot food, massage therapy, entertainment, and medals for all cyclists at the event’s conclusion.
