Keane would consider managing Kerry seniors

Minor manager back in as bookies’ favourite

PETER Keane has given his strongest indication yet that he would give serious consideration to managing the Kerry senior football team if an approach was made to him by the selection committee in place to find Éamonn Fitzmaurice’s successor.

The three-time All-Ireland winning minor football championship manager was asked in the aftermath of Sunday’s history making All-Ireland win by the Kerry minor team if he would be open to moving into what is arguably one of the highest profile Gaelic football managerial posts in the country.

“Of course you would consider it if approached and that’s a nice way of asking the question,” Keane said after leading the county a fifth All-Ireland MFC title, and the third year for him as manager. “This is a huge commitment. This is something you’d have to stop and think about and see will I do this or who would I bring with me or whatever, but all of that is rubbish and I made up my mind that that’s all it was going to be until such a time as you’re asked. And if you’re not asked you didn’t waste your time thinking about something.

“So you don’t know. I’ve no doubt that they probably have their mind already made up who’s probably getting this and I don’t know, I’m only speculating.”

Keane is widely regarded as one of the front-runners to succeed Fitzmaurice who stepped down from the position last month after six years in charge.

Jack O’Connor, Diarmuid Murphy and Maurice Fitzgerald are thought to be the other serious contenders to take over as senior team manager.

A selection committee of Kerry chairman Tim Murphy, secretary Peter Twiss, as well as Eamon Whelan and Terence Houlihan have set an October 8 deadline to name a new management team.
