ABBEYDORNEY
INTER-COUNTY : Well Done to Darragh O Connell, Jack Hannon and Peter Hinchliffe who represented Abbeydorney on the Kerry U14 team today in the Tony Forristal Tournament in Waterford recently. Kerry were very unlucky to loose to Cork by 2 points in the first game and had a famous victory over Galway in the second game winning by 2 points. Kerry just missed out on a semi-final spot due to scoring difference. Jedd Maunsell and Gavin Slattery represented the club on the Kerry U15 team who participated in a Hurling Tournament in Tipperary on Saturday, 25th August. They were defeated by Wexford on a score line of Wexford 2- 10 to Kerry 1- 11. They then played Carlow who they defeated by 4pts. Final Score : Kerry 4-12 Carlow 3-11. Well Done boys.
U6 : The U6s will take part in a blitz in Lixnaw this Thursday evening, 6th September in Lixnaw @ 6.30pm.
U8 : Our U8 team took part in the Super Games blitz in Kilmoyley last Thursday evening. A great performance by all the team. Well done to the players and their mentors.
U10 : We play Ballyheigue in a challenge game this Wednesday evening @ 7.00pm in Abbeydorney. The next N.K. U10 Blitz takes place this Saturday morning @ 10am. Please check with trainers re: venue.
U12 : Our U12s are due to play Lixnaw this Friday evening @ 6.30pm. Venue to be confirmed.
U13 : Well Done to our U13s who defeated Lixnaw in Round 5 of the N.K. U13 ‘B’ C’Ship. Score : Abbeydorney 6-10 Lixnaw 4-08.
U16 : Our U16 team played Ballyduff last Sunday evening in Kilmoyley in the U16 Co. C’Ship A Final. The team had to unfortunately line out without one of their key players, Oisin Maunsell, who was injured in the Minor C’Ship Final the previous weekend. However, the team put in a valiant effort throughout the game and never gave up until the final whistle. MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONS The Sean Lovett Cup returned to Abbeydorney after 10 years amid joyous scenes and bonfires on Sunday evening, 26th August, when a large crowd turned out in The Clubhouse to welcome home our victorious Minor Team who had earlier that day defeated Ballyheigue/ Causeway in the County Minor C’Ship Final in Austin Stacks Park. Many of the team were lining out in their 2nd successive Co. C’Ship Final determined to fight for the coveted prize following last year’s agonising defeat. This game was going to be a tough battle from the outset, with both teams having victories in the previous 2 meetings. It was Nathan Guerin who opened the scoring for the opposition within the first 5 minutes. Michael Slattery slotted over the bar soon after, to register our first score of the game. A Nathan Guerin free put 2 points between the teams once again before Jack Sheehan got on the scoreboard with a nicely taken point from play. Nathan Guerin who was Ballyheigue/ CWay’s scorer in chief was accurate from another placed ball leaving the scoreline at 0-4 to 0-2 with 12 minutes gone on the clock. Cillian Spillane who was working tirelessly to win ball all over the field pointed from play to bring the game back to a one point game. Ballyheigue/CWay narrowed the gap when Gavin Dooley pointed on 14mins stretching their lead to 2 points. However, points from Michael Slattery from an acute angle and Cillian Spillane after a period of dominance brought the sides level on 0-05 each for the first time at the 20th minute mark. It was point for point for the remaining 10 mins of the half, with Michael Slattery sending over 3 more points from play including a one-handed strike when the ball broke high on the right of the goalmouth. Nathan Guerin, Gavin Dooley and Colin Walsh scored for Ballyheigue/Cway leaving the sides level on 0-8 a piece at the half-time whistle. Facing into a stiff breeze for the second half, Michael Slattery pointed from play followed by a great point from the stick of Adam Maunsell pushing our lead to 2 points for the first time in the game. That was quickly overturned however by Ballyheigue/Cway when Dan Goggin goaled to give them a one point lead, 1-08 to 0-10. Further points form Gavin Dooley and Breandán Walsh left 3 points between the sides. Then came our blitz of goals. Keith O’Connor, who had replaced Craig Teahan, bore down on goal and rattled the back of the net in his first passage of play. This was quickly followed by superbly taken goals by Oisin Maunsell and Michael Slattery who had now built up a personal tally of 1-06. The score at this point read Abbeydorney 3-10 to Ballyheigue/Cway’s 1-10 and it looked like we were home and dry but Ballyheigue/Cway were not going to go down without a fight. Nathan Guerin pulled it back to 4 points when he sent over 2 points from play. Keith O’Connor then tapped over what was our final score of the game leaving us with a 5 point lead. Sean Holden was put under severe pressure from the Ballyheigue/ Cway forward line as they bombarded the Abbeydorney goal-line in search of the goals they needed to bring them back into the game but Sean remained calm and assured, as he has been all year, clearing the ball on several occasions. As the game entered the final 5 minutes, Nathan Guerin tapped over 4 more points leaving just a single point between the sides. As we entered injury time, possession was vital, which we secured from the final puckout of the game at which time the final whistle blew. This was a hard-earned victory for our boys; a victory which they richly deserved. Michael Slattery, captain of the team was presented with the Sean Lovett Cup by Chairman of the Kerry Co. Board in front of a large band of Black and Amber supporters. Michael was also presented with the Man of the Match award. The cup has been on tour throughout the parish this week, visiting the local schools and businesses allowing the players and management to savour their success. It is back to the training ground again for this team as they play Crotta O’Neills in the Co. League semi-final this Friday, 7th in Abbeydorney @ 6.30pm. U21 : Round 1 of the Co. U21 C’Ship takes place on Saturday, September 15th. Abbeydorney/B’heigue -v- Kenmare/Kilgarvan in Abbeydorney @ 4.00pm This is a provisional date and subject to change. In the N.K. U21 C’Ship, we received a bye and will play Kilmoyley/Stacks in the semi-final. Date and Venue TBC.
SENIORS : Our Senior team was defeated by Kilmoyley in the quarter-final of the N.K. Senior C’Ship last Friday evening in Kilmoyley. Final Score : Abbeydorney 2-12 Kilmoyley 2-04.
LAST MAN STANDING : Many Thanks to all who supported our Bord Na nÓg fundraiser. The competition kicked off last weekend so best of luck to all who entered.
