JUNIOR GOLF ROUND-UP

THE curtain has come down on another season of Junior golf in Kerry so let’s take a look back at how it spanned out.

The Kerry Junior League concluded in late August at Killarney’s Killeen course where after 10 outings Tralee were crowned champions with a collective 1755 points, to finish well ahead of defending champions Ballybunion, who were second with 1645, with Killarney third just three behind on 1642.

In the plate section, Waterville were the winners finishing 107 points ahead of second-placed Kenmare.

BEAUFORT Golf Club again hosted the Strokeplay Shields with John Molyneaux and Federation Captain John Fox in attendance to present the prizes.

The John Molyneaux Under-17 Shield was won by Philip Byrne (3) Ballybunion with 77 gross, with his club mate Allen Foley (7) second with 80 and another Ballybunion man Edmond Healy (5) third with an 81.

Daniel McGillycuddy (5) of Dooks lifted the John Molyneux Under-16 Shield with 81 gross and the runner-up was Ronan O Neill (11) from Ballybunion with an 87 while Mark Looney (13) from Kenmare was third with a 91.

The Joe Quinlan Under-15 Shield was won by Peter Walsh (11) from Killarney with 83 gross with Ballybunion’s Lochlann Mc Hale (10) second also with an 83 and Killarney’s Cillian Courtney (16) third on 85.

The John B O’Shea Under-14 Shield was played on Killarney’s Killeen course where Cillian Courtney (16) from the host club was the winner with 22 gross stableford points while Mark Gazi (11) from Tralee was runner-up with 21 and Ballybunion’s Phillip Beary (20) was third with 20 while the best nett went to Patrick Lyons (18) Killarney with 27nett stableford points.

So, the season ends and it’s back to school, but it would be remiss of me not to thank Junior Convener Pat O’Dwyer and mention the outstanding work that is done by him on behalf of our juniors each year.
