Culture night offers great mix of events
With this years Culture Night just a few weeks away, place around the South and West of the county on September 21. previews some of the events that will be taking
THERE’S never a dull moment in both South and West Kerry it seems as the areas preparesto play host to another fantastic year of culture here in Kerry.
This years ‘Culture Night’ will take place on Friday September 21 and the towns of Killorglin, Dingle, Cahirsiveen, Ballinskelligs and Waterville will all have events taking place.
Kerry County Council Arts Office has been busy co-ordinating events again this year along with arts groups and other organisations happy to get involved and give a free night of cultural events to their communities.
“It’s a great night of celebration and a fabulous opportunity to enjoy so many free events”, stated Cllr Norma Moriarty speaking at the launch.
In Killorglin at the Pauline Bewick Collection in Library Place, Pauline Bewick herself will be in-conversation with gallery owner and publicist Frank Lewis at 6.00pm. Following this the Killorglin & District Pipe Band will perform a specially commissioned recital at 7.00pm in Library Place.
KFEST have arranged a great evening at The BarN, Paud of Neill’s Bar from 7.30pm until late. Two locally made horror films ‘Tulaig Bheag Woods’ and ‘Brackenmore’ will be screened and will be followed by music into the night with Magnapinna, The Slut Club and more.
In Dingle An Lab are hosting two events which include a short dance film directed by Maria Svensson at 6.00pm at The Phoenix Cinema. They have also organised an Art Adventure, a visual art mystery tour at 8.45pm.
From 6.30pm onwards at Nellifreds, South Wind Blows supported by Nelliefreds, and Beo Binn present LÚMINA, a live music evening featuring Third Smoke, and Dréimire as well as Donal Dineen who will present Backstory, dance music on 7” vinyl.
At An Diseart a Lantern Making workshop will take place from 7.00pm and at McCarthy’s Bar a documentary by filmmaker Lelia Doolin on the life of civil rights leader, Bernadette Devlin McAliskey called ‘Bernadette: Notes On A Political Journey’ will be screened.
Cahirsiveen is hosting an 8ft interactive sound installation called the Chime Cave at the Library from 5.00pm and Fuinneamh, a giant-sized Community Drum will be in the Square from 6.00pm for everyone to have a go on.
Innabubble are presenting their show ‘Sprit of the Forest, as a captivating and stimulating workshop at Cahirsiveen Library at 7.00pm and a Poetry Night with host Holly Woollett will feature storytellers, poets, comedians and song in an open mic evening at Skellig Star Hotel from 8.30pm.
Over in Ballinskelligs the Cill Rialaig Project has arranged a Storytelling Supper, which features an evening of stories at the house of Seanchaí Seán O’ Connaill (1853-1931). There will also be a reception at the Cill Rialaig Art Centre. Bookings can be made in advance.
Leas Cathaoirleach Norma Moriarty will open an event at Tech Amergin in Waterville titled ‘The History, Songs, Music & Poetry of the Iveragh Sea and Shore’ at 8pm. The evening will be presented by Tom Horgan who will illustrate an outline of the maritime and coastal history of Iveragh with singers, poets and musicians.
