Saturday of comedy and craic in Camp

- By TADHG EVANS

IT’S set to be an afternoon and night of comedy, music, and much fun besides in Camp this Saturday, as Paddy’s Picnic prepares to remember Paddy O’Brien, a man who was well known in the locality prior to his passing in April.

Though from Lougher, Paddy was a familiar face also in surrounding areas such as Annascaul, Camp, and Castlegregory.

His son, Vincent, explained that Paddy had received wonderful care in his final days from the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry – and Saturday’s ‘Paddy’s Picnic’ event is a way of saying thanks, while also serving as a fitting tribute to his father.

“My dad was involved in a number of fund-raisers himself, and we’ll be raising funds on the day for the palliative care unit, whose staff gave him excellent care,” he said. “We’re not usually event organisers ourselves – this is our first time doing this – but we’re hoping that Saturday will be a success, and we might make it an annual event in future. We hope people come along and support it.”

With a marquee set for the back of Camp’s Junction Bar on September 8, the music and comedy festival gets underway at 3pm with entertainment offerings such as family fun, a pet show, face painting, a disco, and clown and magic performances running until 6pm.

There’ll be plenty musical entertain from 7pm to 9.30pm, before Joe Rooney and Pat McDonnell channel their days as Fr Damo and Eoin McLove when they get the comedy rolling from 9.30pm.

With Katsquire performing from 11pm till late, the event will also feature barbecue food, raffles, and much craic besides.

“Tickets are available on advance sale for €10, but all donations would be most welcome,” Vincent said.
