Fight to save Post offices in Kerry

- BY SINEAD KELLEHER

A PUBLIC meeting is to be held in Ballinskelligs tonight, Wednesday, September 12, in a bid save the local post office service. The meeting follows a meeting in Kilflynn last week where the local community are also fighting to retain their postal service. The local post office has already closed its doors.

In all 12 post offices are to close in Kerry in the coming months under the restructuring of the postal service across the country. This is a decision that has angered many local communities.

Coiste Forbartha, the local development group, in Ballinskelligs is hoping to find another person to take over the business. The nearest post office to Ballinskelligs is 12km away in Waterville but with no rural transport it is very difficult for the elderly to access services in Waterville.

“We are very disappointed that this has happened. Some people will now be more than 20k away from a post office,” said Dessie Cronin of Coiste Forbartha.

Ballinskelligs Post Office will close its doors in January.
