Poignant local story focus of Culture Night at St Johns’
CONOR Keane’s hard-hitting and widely-lauded documentary Shame, Love, In Shame will be the main focus of Culture Night in Listowel in a special broadcast in St John’s on Friday, September 21, next.
The documentary recounted the now scarcely-credible series of events that befell a young expectant woman from Listowel in the 1940s, and which culminated in her tragic death.
Following the broadcast, a discussion will take place in St John’s around the whole story. And at 7.45pm, the venue will host an evening of film, songs, stories and music featuring the best of local talent with the one and only Sonny Egan. Admission is free.
In another great local production, St John’s will screen Rath on Tuesday, September 18, next at 7.40pm: a gentle piece featuring south Kerry sheep farmer Brendan O’Sullivan.
Made by Kerry County Council Filmmaker In Residence Mieke Vanmechelen, Rath follows Brendan across his lands on the mountains outside Kenmare as he looks back on his life and times, the history of his home area and much, more.
It’s described as a film that highlights our interconnectedness with place and the value of our ancestry.
