(From left): READING provides its own rewards but, lest their efforts might be forgotten, children who pored over books during their summer holidays were presented with certificates at Dingle Library on Saturday.

The children who had joined the Summer Stars/Réalt na Samhradh programme at Dingle Library were presented with certificates by Cllr Norma Moriarty, Chairperson of the South & West Municipal District.

Organised as part of the ‘Right to Read’ campaign, the programme provides a focus and reward system to encourage children to read books during their summer holidays. In recognition of their efforts, participating children were presented with a card which was stamped in the library each time they completed a book.

Brothers Killian and Callum Doyle from 3rd and 2nd Class in Scoil Iognáid Rís told The Kerryman how they really enjoyed reading books and both expressed their preference for adventure stories while ‘Horrid Henry’ was given favourable mention.

The ‘Right to Read’ Programme supports literacy development throughout the country and a measure of its success is to be seen in a study encompassing 50 countries which found that 4th class pupils in Ireland were only outperformed by students from Russia and Singapore in literacy tests. The survey report, published last December, also found that the performance of Irish pupils had improved since the previous study was done in 2011.
