Firies bounce back to take Under 16 title

Firies 2-13 Kenmare Shamrocks 1-15

KENMARE’S Jamie Regan goaled to make it 1-2 to 0-2 early on, with Dylan O’Callaghan hittying the post for Firies.

With Cian O’Connor scoring 0-7, Kenmare deservedly led by had the best of the first half after a cagey opening ten minutes which saw the teams level at two points each.

Kenmare’s Jamie Regan goaled, after reacting to a breaking ball on the edge of the small square. Firies had a chance to goal themselves but Dylan O’Callaghan hit the post with his effort. This gave Kenmare the confidence they needed and with Cian O’Connor scoring seven of their points, they led 1-8 to 0-5 at half time.

The third quarter saw some superb shooting from O’Connor (0-11 in total) for Kenmare and Cian Doe and Brian Burke led the way for Firies.

Goals from Brian Burke and Dylan O’Callaghan gave Firies a three point lead. Gearoid Doyle brilliantl­y save a Cian Hanley shot to preserve that lead.

Firies led by three points going into injury time. Kenmare nearly goaled from a Cian Hanley effort, but Gearoid Doyle pulled off an important stop to his left. A resolute Kenmare narrowed the deficit to a point but a last gasp effort just drifted just wide and Firies were crowned champions.

UNDER 16 FOOTBALL PLATE SEMI-FINAL Castleisla­nd 3-17 South Kerry 2-14

CASTLEISLA­ND booked their spot in the Plate Final with their best display of the competitio­n, leading a good South Kerry team by 2-6 to 0-9 and 3-17 to 2-14 at the final whistle.

Sharpshoot­er Daniel Kelly with 1-6, Adam Joy, and PJ Curtin got the goals, while the Moriarty twins Jack and David Moriarty and Daniel Kelly were the pick of what was an outstandin­g performanc­e overall.
