SNEEM Santos Jimmy O’Brien may be in the twilight of his playing career but he still has the Midas touch when it comes to scoring goals and the prolific striker was razor sharp at Cahermoneen on Sunday bagging four goals in his sides big win over new kids on the block Manor West FC.
When the Sneem legend decides to hang up his boots the family tradition will be preserved as his young son Conor is a star in the making who played beside his father on Sunday and fitted in to his role like a glove and turned in a great shift.
The South Kerry side got off to a blistering start with O’Brien completing a hat trick in 13 minutes.
The first goal came after just 3 minutes after Sneem forced a corner kick.
When the ball came in the Manor West keeper Michael Murphy parried a shot on goals and O’Brien was on to the ball in a flash and hammered it to the back of the net.
Six minutes later they doubled their lead with Sean O’Connor and O’Brien linking up to spread open the Manor defence and a hanball in the box produced a penalty kick.
O’Brien applied a lethal finish arrowing the ball low to the bottom corner of the net.
He completed his hat trick four minutes later latching on to an accurately measured pass from Mike Dennehy finishing to the net in great style.
Manor Park began to grow into the game as time progressed and they were putting some constructive attacks together.
Graham O’Leary forced a corner kick for the Tralee side and it was taken quickly by Alan O’Connor to Frank O’Connor and from the angle of the box he side-footed the ball delightfully past the Sneem keeper.
The Tralee side then enjoyed a period of dominance and they went close to pulling another goal back but Niall Feehan headed his chance wide.
Then they got a free kick 5 yards outside the box which had to be retaken.
From the second attempt Alan O’‘Connor brought a fine save out of the Sneem keeper Dylan Van Dale diving to his right to push the ball away.
Sneem went in ahead 3-1 at the interval and now the first score of the second half would be vital.
Sneem put the game to bed 6 minutes into the second half after a dubious penalty decision that Manor Park were not happy with.
Dion Burke took a tumble in the box and the referee Denis Guerin pointed to the spot,
Manor West were adamant it was a dive but Jimmy O’Brien finished the spot kick to the net in emphatic fashion and now the South Kerry side were in cruise control.
Now they sprang a number of young players from the bench and took the foot off the throttle.
Their 5th goal came in the 78th minute when sub Tim Murphy ran on to a superb over the top ball and he held his composure brilliantly and gave the Manor Park goalie no chance from close range.
Manor Park did get a late consolation goal with Frank O’Connor scoring from the penalty spot after he had been brought down in front of goals.
It was a good win for Sneem and while sterner tests lie ahead they will be one of the leading title contenders in this division.
While Manor Park will be disappointed at losing they will improve as they get a few games under their belts.
It is a learning experience for the squad at present but they seem to be enjoying it.
