Bronze medal for Michael at Five Nations ploughing
BALLYHEIGUE’S Michael O’Halloran can afford to take his foot off the pedal a little this week after he claimed a bronze medal at this years ‘Five Nations’ ploughing championships in Eglington in County Derry.
The ‘Five Nations’ championships saw a number of representatives from Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland taking part in two days of ploughing.
Michael, who hails from Clahaneleish near the town, said that he was very happy to triumph over representatives from the other countries, saying that it’s never easy to win these contests.
“I’m obviously very happy to win medals and titles like these because they are never easy to win. I’m absolutely delighted with the result though,” said Michael, speaking to The Kerryman on Monday.
Already a three time All-Ireland winner in the sport, even Michael admitted that he found it tough going on the weekend.
“I didn’t really know what competition would be there. We just took it as it came. The first day of the ploughing, maybe we weren’t as ready as we thought we were. There was bigger plots there than what we were expecting and we had a short time to do it than we normally would have so there was a definite learning curve,” he said.
“The second day though, we knew what to expect and we were able know what we had to do and thankfully, we had a much better second day,” he finished.
Tom O’Mahony, the PRO of the Kerry Ploughing Association said that he and the rest of the club are very proud of what Michael has achieved.
“He has done Kerry Ploughing proud. It was a great honour him to be chosen to represent his country and we are delighted that he has come away with a bronze medal for this efforts,” said Tom, speaking on Monday.
