Pedal power for Pieta House at Nolan’s Garage

- By STEPHEN FERNANE

IT’S time to get on your bike for Pieta House as Nolan’s Garage in Tralee is hosting a special ‘Charity Cyclethon’ on Saturday, October 20. It’s a chance to put some pedal power into action for a good cause, with all monies raised from the cycle going directly to the local branch of Pieta House in Tralee.

“Our time sheets are filling up quickly, and many local businesses have come on board with raffle prizes, which will be available on the day. It’s getting a great response so far,” Niall Nolan said.

Nolan’s Garage has been with Londis Stores for over a year, and as Londis is a charity partner of Pieta House, Niall decided to mark the anniversary by hosting the fund-raiser. It runs from 9am to 6pm when two stationary bikes will be set up in the garage forecourt. Music will also be provided to help keep cyclists motivated.

“We’re asking people to hop on a stationary bike for just 10 minutes. They can get sponsorship or donate on the day. We will be providing free refreshments for all attending the event, while there will be music and face painting too,” Niall added.

While Tralee is fortunate to have its own Pieta House facility, the financial support from government is minimal. This means the charity relies to a large extent on the voluntary donations it receives. It’s estimated that just €1,000 can take a person through a full counselling service and can save a life.

The funds will also enable Pieta House to continue to provide freely accessible professional services to people who are in suicidal crisis, those who are self-harming, and people who have been bereaved by suicide.

Anyone interested in taking part in the October 20 event can call to Nolan’s Garage in North Circular Road to register.
