The Kerryman Captain’s Challenge
CASTLEGREGORY’S magnificent nine-hole links once again hosted The Kerryman Captain’s on Saturday last for winners of Captain’s Prizes (male and female) at Kerry club’s throughout 2018.
The course on the shores of Lough Gill was bathed in autumnal sunshine on Saturday as guests and competitors were welcomed to Castlegregory by Captain Pat Doody, Lady Captain Mary Ciepierski and Club President, Eddie Hanafin with tea, coffee and scones served, prior to the shotgun start at 10am.
The host club were represented by Helen Harty and Tom Moriarty, who were hoping that local knowledge would give them an advantage and in fact Tom was going for a unique treble, having won the Captain and President’s prizes on consecutive weekends.
It was not to be however but Tom did put in a brave effort to finish in second spot, while Helen did in fact lift the ladies title and following golf, everyone adjourned to Tomaisin’s in Stradbally, for the dinner and presentation of prizes where Tournament Directors Tommy King and Mike Mercer were on hand, ensuring all went as smooth as possible.
Ceann Sibeal’s Michael Lenihan (16) took the Men’s prize with 39pts finishing four ahead of Tom Moriarty (11) from the host club who had 35 with Andy Billot (13) third with 29pts.
Helen Harty (25) from Castlegregory on the Ladies section with 37pts with much to spare over second-placed Peggie O’Donoghue (18) from Killarney with Catriona Daly (23) from Dooks third with 24pts, while Castlegregroy Captain Pat Doody (7) made it two out of three for the hosts, taking the Guest Prize with 35pts.
Castlegregory celebrate their 30th anniversary in 2019 and will again host this event as part of their celebrations.
