FAI JUNIOR CUP THIRD ROUND WRAP-UP

Killarney Celtic 9 Moher Celtic 0

EIGHT Kerry sides were in action in the FAI Junior Cup over the weekend with Killarney Celtic, Killorglin, and Castleisland safely through to the next round while unfortunately, Listowel Celtic, Tralee Dynamos, Strand Road, Classic FC and The Park made their exit from the competition.

In a one sided game at Celtic Park on Saturday night Killarney Celtic demolished their Clare opposition and leading 5-0 at half-time the game was over as a contest.

The star of the show for the winners was Stephen McCarthy who netted a hat trick while Pádraig O’Connor, Stevie O’Mahoney, Gary Keane, Wayne Sparling, Cathal O’Shea, and Vuki Ocic were also on the scoreboard for a rampant

Celtic side.

Celtic won’t have learned much from this game as the opposition was so weak, but it will boost confidence in the squad as they await the draw that will disclose their opponents in the next round of the national competition.

Castleisland 1 Ballingarry AFC (Desmond) 0

CASTLEISLAND showed they true mettle on Sunday with a great win over Desmond League side Balingarry in a closely contested game.

Castleisland’s route one game was giving the Ballingarry defence plenty to worry about and they were a constant threat from set piece situations while their opponents biggest threat was on the break or counter attack.

Castleisland were the better side in the first half creating a good few scoring chances and were unlucky not to be ahead denied on one occasion by the woodwork, but the sides went in scoreless at half-time.

As the second half progressed it looked as if the game would go to extra time but the home side seized an opportunity in the 85th minute with Jonathan Downey scoring the goal that won the game.

They had to defend resolutely to preserve their lead but they were good value for their win at the end.

They can now look forward to the fourth round draw and keep their fingers crossed for a home tie

Shannon Olympic 8 Classic FC 2

CLASSIC travelled to Clare and while they lost comprehensively at the end the scoreline does not do them justice as they were well in the game for a long time.

They went ahead in the first minute of the game with a Michael Conway goal. The home side equalised but Classic went head again with another Conway goal. Shannon brought the game back to parity and Classic looked comfortable going in 2-2 at half time.

However things went pear-shaped for the Tralee side in the second half with Shannon going on a goals blitz which gave them a big winning margin at the end.

Shannon Town 3 St Brendans Park 1

A YOUNG Park side travelled to Clare and turned in a great performance against a strong Clare side making them work hard for their victory.

Aaron Ward was the scorer for The Park. It was a great experience for this young side to play in the national competition and now they can go back and concentrate on the domestic league scene where they will be hoping to feature in the title race in Division 1B.

Strand Road 1 Glin Rovers 3

THIS was always going to be a tough test for Strand Road against a good Desmond League side and they turned in a very good performance and matched their opponents in most departments of play except in the most important place on the scoreboard.

Paul Sheahan, Eoin O’Connor and Gary Culhane scored for Glin and the Strand Road scorer was JJ Prior.
