Joe’s big send-off to the United States fondly recalled twenty-four years on
WHAT a send off! That’s Listowel man Joe Holyoake centre getting pulled apart in all the well-wishing during the mother of all send-offs to the US.
Yes, it was the era of wall-to-wall denim, confirmation style jackets, dodgy moustaches and the odd mullet - now only in evidence in pictures like the one above, taken on the eve of Joe’s departure in October 1984. It was a very Listowel affair, all the boys above from the town and bidding Joe a great Listowel farewell. It was sent in by Patricia McElligott this week marking the 24th anniversary of Joe’s leavetaking. But this native son thankfully returned home years later, his horizons well and truly broadened by the States.
