Concerns raised over Fairhill pedestrian crossing plans
PLANS to upgrade the pedestrian crossing at Fairhill, Killarney, have caused anger among some local councillors who believe that the proposals by management will make traffic matters worse rather than better.
Works on the pedestrian crossing, which is located close to The Royal Hotel and Killarney Courthouse, will include revisions to kerb lines, loading bays and a reduction in the road carriageway, as well as the construction of a kerbed island linked to the existing island at the Friary roundabout.
A low kerb will be provided on the build out near The Royal Hotel to allow access to the laneway and bollards will be placed near the KDYS to prevent parking and to allow cars exit safely.
Cllr Niall Kelleher said that there isn’t enough provision for loading bays in the proposal and buses are also not accommodated for. “It is not going to solve the problem – it is not thought out,” he argued.
Cllr John Joe Culloty also said he was concerned about the unloading of buses –and of lorries – and said feedback should be sought from local businesses after six months.
Senior Council Engineer David Doyle, meanwhile, said that there is bus set down provision nearby on EastAvenue Road.
All councillors – bar Cllr Kelleher who abstained – voted in favour of works to start this month.
