Catherine signs her way into history at TV inaugurati­on

TRALEE’S Catherine White signed her place in the history books this week with her role in the televised inaugurati­on of President Michael D Higgins.

It was the first time that the Presidenti­al Inaugurati­on was signed live for television on Catherine was on hand to make sure that her name was etched into the books.

Sunday night at Dublin Castle saw Mr Higgins officially starting his second term as President and as thousands watched on TV, Catherine was right there at the centre of it all.

Catherine - who was born, raised and still lives in Tralee - is a profession­al sign interprete­r and is well known in the deaf community for her television work and for her work in the local area.

Describing the how it feels to be a part of history, Catherine took a moment to herself to think about it before telling

that it felt “pretty amazing”.

Catherine was approached for the role through to her well earned reputation with ITV and RTÉ which she had garnered over 30 years of experience in covering major events through sign language.

Over her the last year alone, Catherine has covered the Sinn Féin leadership speech, the Papal Visit highlights, the Presidenti­al Election and of course, now the Presidenti­al inaugurati­on.

“It’s been lovely to have represente­d Tralee and Kerry at such major events,” she said, speaking on Tuesday.
