The Hiker returns to Ballyheigue by very popular demand

-

STANDING ovations both nights and a thirst by even those who saw it once to see it again – it can only mean that the Ballyheigue Community Players were left with no choice but to put on one more night of The Year of the Hiker.

And they’re only delighted to hit the boards once more, given the cast and crew enjoyed the experience every bit as much as the audiences at both recent stagings of the John B Keane hit at the Community Centre in the North Kerry seaside village.

“The Hiker is back by popular demand and we’re really looking forward now to giving those who didn’t get the chance to see it recently another opportunity to come along,” leading actor Brendan Moriarty said.

Sunday night next, November 18, sees the once-off performance, which will start at 8pm.

Set up by former Ballyheigue PP Fr Thomas Leane, the Players have had two productions previously, both also John B: Sive and The Field.

This time the action focuses on the Hiker - the character who one day leaves the house for cigarettes and is never seen again until his dramatic return 20 years later in time for his daughter’s wedding. Pat Sheehan and John Joe Duggans play the Hiker’s sons; Mary Corridan as his wife, Mary; Treasa Falvey as his daughter, Kate; Cathy Curran as his sister, Freda and Stephen Flaherty as Mary’s new husband.

Tickets are €10, with all proceeds going to the Community Centre.
