LAST CHANCE TO WIN THIS LAND ROVER 90

- By TADHG EVANS

THERE was a special treat last week for the children as Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club paid a visit with a recently restored Land Rover 90 – a raffle for which is likely to benefit the school indirectly.

The school provides specialist education for those aged between four and 18 with mild general learning disabilities.

The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club will raffle off the vehicle – which will be considered a vintage next year when it turns 30 years old – in the Innisfallen Hotel, Killarney, on Saturday, November 17.

Through this, the club will raise funds which will be split between Down Syndrome Kerry and Recovery Haven.

By supporting the former, the club has effectively given its backing to St Ita’s and St Joseph’s, which Tom Leslie of Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage explained is likely to benefit indirectly from the funds raised.

All this made Friday’s visit a necessity for the club, and it went down well with young students and adults alike, Tom explained.

“We restored this 1989 Land Rover 90 last winter,” he said. “It’s a 2.5 turbo-diesel vehicle, and it coincides with marking 70 years of Land Rover.

“We landed up to the school, and the kids were all excited. While I was up there, I’d say about 12 of them hopped in for a spin.

“We chose two very good charities to benefit from our raffle – Down Syndrome Kerry and Recovery Haven – and there were representatives from both charities there.”

The draw itself will take place at around 9.30pm, and the club hopes that it may be streamed out on Facebook.

Tickets cost €10, and some of the pupils were given tickets to distribute last week, with parents and members of St Ita’s and St Joseph’s joining in with the selling.

Tom was hugely grateful to all who were involved in the restoration; sponsorship of the draw; and indeed everyone who helped out last winter and since.

Tickets are also available online until 12pm on the day of the draw from the club’s website, www.killarneyvintage.com/, and a number of local outlets such as ‘Killarney Glass’ and ‘Who’s 4 Shoes’. Alternatively, one can give Tom a call at (087) 238 3809.

“It’s a wonderful prize, but it’s not the only one up for grabs,” Tom added. “The second prize is a €1,200 MD O’Shea’s voucher, and the third prize is a John Deere lawnmower from Seamus Weldon’s.

“There’s also a two-night stay at Parknasilla Resort and Spa; a one-night stay at Woodlands House B&B, and a €200 voucher for Killarney Oils.

“Above all, these are wonderful causes, and we’d appreciate any support.”
